Predicting violence among incarcerated juvenile offenders. The role of strain as a result of fear of fellow inmates  Download PDF

Michael Windzio, University of Bremen

This paper is focused on consequences of deprivation of security in youth prisons, measured by items indicating fear of fellow inmates, which is one of the most important dimensions of “pains of imprisonment” described by Gresham Sykes. It will be argued that these pains are risk factors increasing the likelihood of violence towards fellow inmates. Starting from Agnew’s general strain theory, fear of fellow inmates will be identified as one of several negatively-valued stimuli which increase the likelihood of violent behaviour. Results of logistic regressions using longitudinal data of 624 inmates in juvenile custodial institutions in Germany show that the probability of violent offences against fellow inmates increases, the more intensively fear of fellow inmates is experienced. In a similar way, inmates who are member of a clique or who have antagonists among their fellow inmates or officials have a higher probability of violence against fellow inmates. These effects do not disappear if physical conditions, anomic norm orientation and the ability of accommodation are controlled. Following from this, the analysis gives insight into origins of violence among inmates on basis of general strain theory.

Regionale Mismatcharbeitslosigkeit als Ursache des Beschäftigungsproblems – Faktum oder Schimäre? Download PDF

Tanja Buch, University of Hamburg

Due to the huge regional disparities that characterise the German labor market, a consistent demand exists for the work force to show more regional flexibility. The immediate requirement for regional mobility can be measured by the volume of regional mismatch occurrence. The results of this study suggest however, that this phenomenon seems to be of little importance in the context of the largescale unemployment problem the German labor market is facing. The small number of affected occupations primarily constitute the secondary labor market typified by low occupational skill demands and unattractive conditions of employment. Thus, besides regional also motivational and personal factors of mismatch seem to play a decisive role.

„…macht Unsichtbares transparent.“-Über die Potentiale der Dialogischen Introspektion in der Organisationsberatung Download PDF

Markus Friederici, University of Hamburg

The following article outlines the methodology of dialogical introspection, which provides a useful set of tools for the observation and understanding of organizational problems. In fact, the method is explored in the context of organizational consulting. While the dialogical introspection can be progressively combined with qualitative research methods, it might also result in organizational problems, which were not obvious at the start of the introspection. However, the usefulness of this approach is underlined.
